LIVE THE SONG – EMBRACE ME

Song of Songs 8:2-4

She

I would lead you
and bring you to my mother’s house—
    she who has taught me.
I would give you spiced wine to drink,
    the nectar of my pomegranates.
His left arm is under my head
and his right arm embraces me.
Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you:
Do not arouse or awaken love
    until it so desires.

His left arm is under my head and his right arm embraces me.

How many different positions does your husband embrace you during sex?

How many ways does he hold you while he strokes your most intimate parts?

How many ways do you connect while he works magic with his hands?

NOT OUR OWN

The other night while teaching a group of newlyweds and engaged couples, we were brainstorming the wrong messages that we received about sex and contrasting them to God’s truth. When talking about sex as a protection against temptation, someone brought up 1 Corinthians 7:3-5 which basically says that our body in not our own.

The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

I have to be honest – this has never been my favorite verse about sex.

LIVE THE SONG – EVERY DELICACY

Song of Songs 7:13

She

The mandrakes send out their fragrance,

and at our door is every delicacy,
both new and old,
that I have stored up for you, my beloved.

Is every delicacy at your door – both new and old.

Having a great sex life is a journey. It is a journey of discovering how our bodies work and how our spouses bodies work. It is a process of building trust and getting comfortable enough to communicate our desires and being bold enough to share our passion. It is a journey of recognizing baggage that has affected us, asking for God’s help in dealing with it and claiming His redemption in our life. It is a lifetime of exploring each other and mining the deepest parts of our lover.

LIVE THE SONG – TO THE COUNTRYSIDE

Song of Songs 7:11-12

She

11 Come, my beloved, let us go to the countryside,
let us spend the night in the villages.[p]
12 Let us go early to the vineyards
to see if the vines have budded,
if their blossoms have opened,
and if the pomegranates are in bloom—
there I will give you my love.

Let us go to the countryside

I love having sex in other locations, but it hasn’t always been that way.

Our family lives in California so we often travel for a week to visit. I used to fret and worry. Would someone hear us? Would they guess if we came down stairs late or slipped away in the middle of the day? Would we mess up the sheets? Sex rarely happened.

LIVE THE SONG – BREATH LIKE APPLES

Song of Songs 7:6-9

How beautiful you are and how pleasing,
    my love, with your delights!
Your stature is like that of the palm,
and your breasts like clusters of fruit.
I said, “I will climb the palm tree;
I will take hold of its fruit.”
May your breasts be like clusters of grapes on the vine,
the fragrance of your breath like apples,
and your mouth like the best wine.

Does your breath smell like apples? Fresh, crisp, sparkling?

LIVE THE SONG – THE DANCE

Song of Songs 6:13 – 7:5

He

Why would you gaze on the Shulammite
as on the dance of Mahanaim?

[n]How beautiful your sandaled feet,
    O prince’s daughter!
Your graceful legs are like jewels,
the work of an artist’s hands.
Your navel is a rounded goblet
    that never lacks blended wine.
Your waist is a mound of wheat
    encircled by lilies.
Your breasts are like two fawns,
like twin fawns of a gazelle.
Your neck is like an ivory tower.
Your eyes are the pools of Heshbon
by the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
    looking toward Damascus.
Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel.
Your hair is like royal tapestry the king is held captive by its tresses.

Many people believe that She is doing a dance for him – right down to the nude.

A Striptease

The Pleasures of Morning Sex

As my husband and I have gotten older, we have learned to appreciate mornings sex for several reasons.  After a good night’s sleep, some of the aches and pains have receded and our bodies feel rested.  My brain slows down enough to put my “to do list” on the back burner for a while.  Hormones surge and bodies function best in the morning. And as I have gained confidence, I  appreciate seeing each other in the light of day and savoring those images. Consider taking advantage of morning sex and see what a difference it can make.

THE MAGIC THUMB

Sometimes a woman needs just a little something extra but doesn’t exactly know what. Intercourse feels sooo good, but we are just not quite there. A thumb might be just the trick.

When you have intercourse in the Woman on Top position, your husband can rest his thumb against your clitoris.  Or he can hold it just below to provide the little bit of tension or awareness you need.

LIVE THE SONG – POLISHED IVORY

Ruth BuezisSong of Songs 5:10-14

She

10 My beloved is radiant and ruddy,
    outstanding among ten thousand.
11 His head is purest gold;
    his hair is wavy
    and black as a raven.
12 His eyes are like doves
    by the water streams,
washed in milk,
    mounted like jewels.
13 His cheeks are like beds of spice
    yielding perfume.
His lips are like lilies
    dripping with myrrh.
14 His arms are rods of gold
    set with topaz.
His body is like polished ivory
    decorated with lapis lazuli.

How many of us really look at our husbands bodies?

LIVE THE SONG – FAINT WITH LOVE

Ruth BuezisSong of Songs 5:4-7

She

My beloved thrust his hand through the latch-opening;
my heart began to pound for him.
I arose to open for my beloved,
and my hands dripped with myrrh,
my fingers with flowing myrrh,
on the handles of the bolt.
I opened for my beloved,
but my beloved had left; he was gone.
My heart sank at his departure.[k]
I looked for him but did not find him.
I called him but he did not answer.
The watchmen found me
as they made their rounds in the city.
They beat me, they bruised me;
    they took away my cloak,

those watchmen of the walls!
Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you—
    if you find my beloved,
what will you tell him?
Tell him I am faint with love.

This is a dream about lost opportunities – about regret.
